IMDb Profile Reputation: What Actors Can Fix
How an IMDb profile is built, which errors you can correct, what IMDb will not remove, and what a claimed page lets you control.
An IMDb profile is a public database page built from credits, a biography and personal details that contributors submit and IMDb staff review. You can correct what is wrong and, with a claimed IMDbPro page, control a few personal fields, but IMDb says it does not remove accurate information.
That second half decides everything. Most actors who write to us about their IMDb page want something deleted: an old credit, a birth name, a birth year, a line in a biography. Some of those requests have a real route. Others do not, and they can hurt the account that files them. This guide separates what you can correct, hide or only outweigh, shows the route for each, and explains how the page behaves in search results.
Everything below comes from IMDb's help pages and Google's help pages as read for this guide. Platform rules change, so each is stated as the page says it.
- Anyone with a free IMDb account can submit corrections. The editing team reviews them, and evidence such as third-party links or images helps.
- IMDb says it keeps accurate facts and credits, however obscure. Wrong, unverifiable or ineligible entries can be corrected or removed.
- A claimed IMDbPro page lets you hide a birth year and a birth name, manage alternate names, choose Known For credits and replace the biography.
- IMDb does not delete biographies, and we found no route to delete a person's page. You can add accurate material so that older items are shown less.
- Search engines can only drop a result from their own index. The page itself changes only at IMDb.
How an IMDb profile is created and who writes it
An IMDb name page is not a profile you open. It is a database record written by contributors. IMDb separates the two things people confuse: an IMDb account tracks your own activity such as ratings and lists, while a name page covers a person's filmography, biography, trivia and news. The help page on the difference says users add the page's information through the Edit page button and that IMDb staff review the submissions.
Three things follow. First, the page can exist and grow without you, because users add a name page's information. Second, the biography may not be written by anyone. IMDb says that when a page has no written biography it creates one from existing page information, and a manually submitted biography replaces it once approved. Third, nothing a contributor submits is live at once. A member of the editing team checks each update (IMDb's page on adding data), and IMDb says it may decline a submission it cannot verify or that breaks a Help Center guideline.

Which IMDb errors you can correct, hide or only outweigh
The test is simple: is the entry wrong, or is it merely unwelcome? Wrong entries have a correction route. Unwelcome but accurate entries do not, except for a short list of personal fields on a claimed page.
| What bothers you | Route | Who can do it | Outcome to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Misspelled or wrong name | Name correction through Edit page | Any account | Credits are kept as shown on screen; the page name follows your most used credited name |
| Credit that is wrong | Correct or delete, with an explanation | Any account | Removed if you can show the person or role is not in the title |
| Credit that belongs to a namesake | Move credits or name split | Any account | Credits move to the right person's page |
| Missing credit | Add credit with on-screen evidence | Any account | Added if the title is listed and the credit verifies |
| Error in the biography | Biography correction, or replacement on a claimed page | Any account; claimed page for full replacement | Corrected; not deleted |
| Birth year shown | Display setting on a claimed page | IMDbPro member with a claimed page | Hidden from display and from searches for that year |
| Birth name shown | Alternate names setting on a claimed page | IMDbPro member with a claimed page | Hidden and no longer searchable |
| Accurate but old credit | None for removal | Nobody | Stays; newer credits shift emphasis |
The pattern: a mistake of fact has a route open to any account, a display choice has a route only for a claimed page, and an accurate but uncomfortable entry has no deletion route.
What IMDb will not remove
IMDb will not delete accurate information, and it will not delete your page because you would like it gone. On this its help pages are consistent. The page on keeping and correcting information says IMDb does not alter or delete correct, factual information or credits, however obscure or trivial. The page on failed deletions says plainly that "IMDb will not remove accurate information."
Four cases come up repeatedly.
The biography. IMDb says it does not remove biographies entirely. A wrong statement can be corrected. A claimed page can replace the biography with your own text, which may leave information out, but it cannot be deleted outright and must meet the minimum length.
A credit you regret. If the credit is eligible and matches the on-screen credits, it stays. IMDb lists work as billed on screen and treats removal of correct credits as outside its policy.
A namesake's page, or a page for someone else with your name. IMDb does not remove a page just because the name matches another person. It adds Roman numerals to tell people apart.

The help pages read for this guide describe correction and deletion of titles, but none describes a route to delete a person's page on request. We found no such route, so do not plan around one. What a claimed IMDbPro page lets you control
A claimed page is the only place where IMDb gives the subject direct control, and the control is narrow. Claiming requires an IMDbPro subscription. The claim page says Premium members should get an email notice within 24 hours of a reviewed claim, and that Basic members claim when they create the subscription. IMDb's pages name the tiers differently: the claim, birth-year and birth-name pages say Premium and Basic, while the page on keeping information says Standard and Free. The Known For page says Premium is required for that feature. Check the tiers and what each includes when you subscribe.
What the help pages say a claimed page can do:
- Birth year. Set the display to not show, show on IMDbPro only, or show on both. If you hide it, the page says your name will not appear in searches for that year, but you will still appear in searches for your birth month and day and in Born Today.
- Birth name. Hide it from display on IMDb and IMDbPro, after which the name is no longer searchable. This is done under Manage alternate names.
- Alternate names. Choose which alternate names display. An unchecked name leaves a "Credited as a different name" label on the related credits and cannot be searched.
- Biography. Replace the existing one with your own. Once you update it, other contributors cannot change it.
- Known For and professions. Choose up to four Known For credits (only verified credits shown in your filmography qualify, and at least one must stay displayed) and up to three professions. IMDb may override a selection for editorial reasons if it could be misleading.
- Images and details. Set the featured images, add a reel and optional personal details.
Two limits matter. A self-verified entry, marked with an orange asterisk, can be removed only through the IMDbPro membership under which the page was claimed, and IMDb says unclaiming removes all IMDbPro-exclusive information and images, with no recovery. Second, hiding a field changes what is shown, not whether the fact is true. A birth date can be supported by public records, printed publications or official documents, and IMDb's guidelines say that if a person has chosen to hide a birth name or birth year, those fields cannot be submitted by others.
Related readVerification Badges: Do They Help Your Reputation?Trade press reported in 2019 that IMDb would remove birth names on request when the name is not broadly publicly known and the person no longer uses it. The help page read for this guide describes the IMDbPro route above, so follow that page.

How to correct a credit, a name or a biography
Corrections follow the same shape wherever they start: Edit page at the bottom of a name or title page, the data type, the form, the check, then submit. IMDb asks you to use the check button and to fix red and yellow boxes until the box turns green before you submit.
Credits
The rule for credits is the one most people miss. IMDb lists work as it appears on screen, and a contract does not change that. Its eligibility page says contracts, call sheets and payment receipts do not prove a credit when the name is in the end credits; the accepted evidence for a name in the end credits is a screen capture of the credit roll showing it clearly. For uncredited work on a released title, a self-submitted entry can be supported by other documents, and acceptance remains at the editors' discretion.
When a credit looks wrong, the guidance for contributors is to check it against the title and not from memory. In its words: "Please do not audit credits from memory alone." If a role exists but has no on-screen credit, the correction is to add the uncredited attribute, not to delete the entry. Deletion is for a credit where the person or role does not appear in the title at all.
Related readCrunchbase profile for a founder: claim, fix, limitsCredits also disappear for ordinary reasons. IMDb lists ineligible work types such as stage plays and radio, credits in the wrong filmography section, credits on a series page instead of an episode, and unverified credits on unreleased titles. A deleted credit may be resubmitted once with verification if it fits none of those categories.
Names
IMDb lists a person under the stage or professional name they have used most often or latest in credits, and keeps one filmography per person whatever the number of names. A name must match the on-screen credit at the title's original release. A change for future credits is possible for someone with an active career, for example after registering a professional name with a guild. The help page says a correction can take a week at best.
For a misspelled name, IMDb keeps the credit exactly as it appeared on screen, even if it was misspelled there. The correction form has an option to update existing credits with an "as" attribute, which applies only when the listing matches the on-screen credit.
Biography
Non-claimed pages take biography corrections through Edit page, with the new text written to the biographical guidelines and an author given in the By field. The biographical data guidelines set a mini-biography in English, in third person and full sentences, at least 50 words and at most 10,000, with birth dates in the date field only. They bar derogatory or speculative content, including rumors and gossip. For the separate bio-trivia section they also exclude phone numbers, addresses, and details of sexual orientation, religion, medical history or political affiliation unless the detail is central to the person's public career or activism and already publicly available. If an item breaks those rules, cite the guideline in the explanation field.

IMDb has specific tools for name collisions, a frequent wrong-entry problem for actors. Two situations differ.
Your credits sit on someone else's page, or theirs on yours. IMDb has two routes to split them. One moves selected credits within a department. The other splits a whole department, where IMDb can create a new page with the same name and a different Roman numeral. In both, the help page tells you to record each valid credit by title, not by its position in the list, because positions shift. IMDb's page on deleted credits says credits can disappear temporarily while being separated from a namesake and usually reappear within a couple of weeks.
You have two pages for yourself. This happens when an old spelling or a former name was entered as a new person. The claim steps for IMDbPro say to check that you are not already listed under another spelling or an old name before creating a new page. Combining name variants triggers a warning in the correction form, which IMDb calls expected, so confirm every credit under both names belongs to you before you continue.
Scenario with invented generic details: an actor's page carries a namesake's commercials. List the credits that do not belong, check each against the title, file the move with the explanation that the namesake is a different person, and wait for the review before touching the biography. One combined submission creates confusion if part of it is declined.
How an IMDb page behaves in search and AI answers
An IMDb name page is one result among many that mention your name, and its text can be carried into other places. A search engine can drop a result from its own index, but that does not change the source. Google's help page on removals says it "can only remove things from Google Search results," and that to have material taken off the hosting site you must contact the site's owner. For IMDb that means the correction routes above.
Related readKnowledge panel for authors: fix book dataKnowledge panels work differently from results. Google's knowledge panel help says panel facts come from a variety of sources that compile factual information, that for some topics such as movies or music Google may work with data partners, and that official representatives can claim a panel and suggest changes. Google also describes panels as automatically generated, so claiming one is not full control. Those pages do not say which database feeds a particular panel, so treat IMDb as one possible influence and test with your own searches.
AI assistants and answer engines can draw on widely available pages, and a name page may be among them. A fix at IMDb is a fix upstream, but it does not reach a cached copy or an answer already given. After the change is live, ask the same question in several assistants, note which page each answer appears to rest on, and compare it with the corrected record. Our AI search reputation page covers auditing those answers.
A page that shows less is not always better. A name page with accurate credits, a bio you wrote and a current headshot is a strong result for your own name. Our personal brand page covers the pages you control beyond IMDb.
A realistic timeline for IMDb corrections
IMDb's help pages give processing figures that differ, so plan on the wider range. The page on adding data says review usually takes 12 to 48 hours but can take longer. The page on when an update appears says approved contributions usually appear within 1 to 7 days depending on data type, that submissions are not processed in the order received, and that IMDb can decline or delete information at any time. The name-change page says a week at best. Its separate Data Processing Times page is where the current schedule sits.

- Day 1 to 2: file the correctionsSubmit credits, name and biography fixes in separate submissions, each with an explanation and evidence, so one refusal does not hold up the rest.
- Days 2 to 9: wait for reviewTrack each submission in your contribution history, which shows whether it is pending, approved or declined. Resubmit only with new evidence.
- Week 2: claim and set display fieldsIf you hold or take an IMDbPro membership, claim the page and set birth year, birth name, alternate names and Known For credits. IMDb says a Premium claim notice should arrive within 24 hours.
- Week 3 onward: re-check search and AI answersSearch your name in a private window and ask two or three assistants. Cached copies and older answers update on the search engine's schedule, not IMDb's.
These are our usual ranges from experience, not promises. IMDb sets its own timing and can change it.
Mistakes that make an IMDb problem worse
Five patterns make things worse.
- Asking for deletion of accurate data. It is refused, and it counts against your accuracy rating.
- Using a contract as proof. IMDb treats the on-screen credit as the record. A contract promising a credit is not evidence of one.
- Pasting a promotional biography. The guidelines require third person and full sentences. IMDbPro's content rules for self-verified entries exclude advertising, and Data Editors decide what counts.
- Editing the page of a namesake or a rival. Move only what is yours, with the title evidence, and say why in the explanation.
- Paying someone to "fix" a page without checking the route. The help pages describe one set of Edit page forms and one set of evidence rules. Treat any promise of a faster or private route as a red flag.
The next step: audit before you ask for anything
Write three lists: what is wrong, what is unwelcome and what is simply old. Only the first goes to IMDb as corrections. The second is handled by display settings on a claimed page. The third is handled by adding accurate, current material.
If an IMDb entry is wrong and the correction was declined, or you are unsure which route fits, send us the page and what you have tried. Reputation Partners reviews it in a private audit and tells you which parts can move and which cannot.
Questions people ask
Can I delete my IMDb page?
We found no route in IMDb's help pages to delete a person's page on request. IMDb says it keeps accurate facts and credits. What you can do is correct errors, and on a claimed IMDbPro page, hide a birth year and a birth name and replace the biography.
Can I change my name on IMDb?
Yes, within the rules. IMDb lists people under the professional name they use most often or latest in credits, and a change for future credits is possible for active careers. You submit a name correction with an explanation. The page says it can take a week at best, and a rule-breaking correction may be rejected.
Do I need IMDbPro to fix my page?
No for errors. Any free IMDb account can submit corrections to credits, names and biographies. IMDbPro is needed for the controls reserved to a claimed page, such as hiding a birth year, choosing Known For credits and replacing the biography so that other contributors cannot change it.
Why was my correction declined?
IMDb says it may decline a submission it cannot verify or that breaks a guideline. Check your contribution history for its status, and resubmit only with better evidence, such as a screen capture of the end credits for a credited role. Repeated attempts to remove factual information can affect your account.
Can I add a credit that was not on screen?
Possibly, at the editors' discretion. IMDb lists work as billed in the original version of a title. For released titles it accepts an uncredited attribute when the work is identifiable on screen, and uncredited work usually needs at least one credited entry first. Editors may remove uncredited work at any time.
Does fixing IMDb change what appears in search?
Only after the source changes and search engines refresh their copy. Google's help page says it can only remove things from its own results and points you to the site owner for the source. Re-check your results after the IMDb change is live, and allow time for caches.
