Remove Amazon seller feedback: what qualifies

Remove Amazon seller feedback that breaks the rules: sort the comment, request removal in Feedback Manager, and know what Amazon leaves in place.

To remove Amazon seller feedback, open Feedback Manager in Seller Central, find the comment in the Recent Feedback table and click the request removal button. Amazon's seller guide says the feedback must meet eligibility criteria, such as being inaccurate or unrelated to your product or service, and that not all requests are granted. A rating that is merely unfair usually stays.

Seller feedback is the rating a buyer leaves about the seller's service: shipping, packaging, communication. It is not the star review under a product page, and the two follow different rules. Most failed removal requests come from sellers who file a genuine service complaint as if it were a rule breach, so the first job is sorting, not clicking.

Amazon's help pages could not be read for this guide. The rules below are limited to what an Amazon-hosted seller guide in the Seller Central forums states. Anything beyond it is described as a question to check in Seller Central, not as a fact.

The short version
  • Seller feedback and product reviews are separate things. Sort the comment first: is it inaccurate, unrelated to your product or service, a breach of content rules, or a genuine complaint about how you handled the order?
  • Amazon's guide ties removal to eligibility criteria about the feedback itself. It does not describe a removal ground for "the buyer was unfair" or "I fixed the problem".
  • Request removal once, in Feedback Manager, with the narrowest true reason. If it is refused, a public reply and a fix to the cause are your remaining tools.
  • Never pay, reward or pressure a buyer to change a rating. The US federal rule on reviews forbids intimidation and unfounded legal threats aimed at getting reviews removed or changed.

Two time limits and one warning from Amazon's own guide frame everything that follows.

90 daysthe time a buyer has to leave seller feedback, as the guide states it
60 daysthe time a buyer has to remove feedback they left, per the same guide
Not allremoval requests are granted, as the guide says

Seller feedback and product reviews are different things: sort the comment first

A comment decides its own route by what it describes. Seller feedback rates the transaction: was the parcel on time, was the packaging intact, did the seller answer messages. A product review rates the item itself: does it work, does it match the photos, is it well made. The two sit in different places on Amazon and are handled through different tools.

The confusion is common because the feedback form lets a buyer type free text. A buyer who is unhappy with the item often writes about the item in the seller feedback box. Whether Amazon will remove such a comment as "unrelated to your service" is a judgment call on its side. The guide read for this article gives the general test, unrelated to your product or service, and no more detail than that, so do not assume a product-only comment is automatically removable.

A mixed comment is the trap. If the buyer writes that the item broke and that delivery took three weeks, part of the sentence is about service. Read the comment as a reviewer would: if any part of it is about how you handled the order, the comment is likely to stay, because the service half is valid feedback.

Sort every comment into one of four buckets before you do anything else:

  • Inaccurate or mistaken: the wrong seller, a different order, a rating that contradicts the facts of the order.
  • Unrelated to your product or service: the comment never concerns the order, the item, or your handling of it.
  • Content rule breach: abusive or obscene language, personal information, promotion or a link. Check which reasons the removal form offers before you rely on this bucket.
  • Genuine service complaint: late, damaged in transit, no reply, wrong item sent.

The first three can be worth a request. The fourth almost never is. A comment in the first bucket should be backed by the order ID and the exact mismatch.

What Amazon removes and what it leaves: the decision table

The table below sorts the buckets by what Amazon is likely to do. It is a practitioner's reading of the guide's general criteria, not a list of Amazon rules. The only rule it rests on is the guide's own statement: Amazon "has specific guidelines for feedback removal, so not all requests are granted."

Comment typeLikely outcomeBest routeRisk if you push
Inaccurate or mistakenRemoval is plausibleRequest removal, give order ID and the mismatchLow
Unrelated to product or serviceRemoval is plausibleRequest removal, quote the unrelated wordsLow
Abusive language or personal dataRemoval is plausibleRequest removal if the form offers a matching reasonLow
Genuine service complaintStaysPublic reply, fix the causeHigh: repeat requests waste credibility
Unfair but accurateStaysPublic replyHigh: contacting the buyer the wrong way can create a policy problem

Notice what the table does not contain: a route for "the buyer is wrong in their judgment". That is deliberate. A buyer is allowed to be harsh, and a rating from a buyer who misjudged your service is still a rating. The seller's lever is the eligibility test, not the merits.

How to request feedback removal in Feedback Manager

Removal requests go through Feedback Manager in Seller Central. The Amazon-hosted guide describes the sequence: find the feedback in the Recent Feedback table and click the request removal button. Everything else in the steps below is practice, not Amazon text.

Filing one removal request
  1. Read the full comment and the orderOpen the order, read the whole comment and note whether it describes the item, the delivery or your handling. Decide which bucket it belongs to before opening the form.
  2. Open Feedback ManagerGo to the Recent Feedback table and locate the comment by order ID.
  3. Click request removalUse the button on the correct row and pick the narrowest true reason the form offers, not the one that sounds strongest.
  4. Check the resultWhen Amazon answers, confirm in the table whether the comment still counts. Keep the order ID and a note of what you filed.
  5. Escalate once, with specificsIf the answer is a refusal you can show to be a misreading, follow up once and quote the exact words of the comment that meet the criterion. Do not argue the merits of the order.

Amazon's guide gives buyers 90 days to leave feedback and 60 days to remove it. It does not say, in the version read for this guide, how long a seller has to ask for removal, so do not plan around a figure. Treat the lack of a stated deadline as a reason to file as soon as you have sorted the comment. A request filed in the first week is never worse than one filed in the eleventh.

One more point on order: request first, reply second. A reply written first may be wasted on a comment you are about to lose, and a reply written after a refused request can take the refusal into account.

When Amazon refuses: the support case and its limits

A refusal means the comment did not meet the criteria on the reviewer's reading. One calm follow-up is reasonable if you can point to a specific misreading, for example that the comment names another seller's product or contains a phone number the first reviewer overlooked. A second and third identical request is not.

The pattern that works is narrow and factual. Name the sentence, name the reason, attach nothing you do not need. The pattern that fails is a long account of why the buyer is mistaken, because the reviewer is not judging the order. Removal is a rules process, not an appeals court.

Three other things a refusal tells you. First, the comment is probably valid service feedback, and the better use of your time is the cause. Second, the guide read for this article describes no path to contest a rating on the facts alone beyond the removal request. Third, newer and better ratings accumulate over time, which is the slow remedy that does not depend on a decision.

Can you ask the buyer to remove it? The rules on contacting buyers

The temptation is obvious: message the buyer, apologize, offer a refund and ask them to withdraw the rating. Two limits apply, and neither is optional.

The first is Amazon's own. The guide lists Amazon's Buyer-Seller Messaging as the way to address a buyer's concerns privately. The buyer-seller communication rules were not readable for this guide, so read them in Seller Central before you send anything that mentions the rating, and keep every message about the order, not about the score.

The second is the law. The US Federal Trade Commission's rule on consumer reviews and testimonials took effect on October 21, 2024. According to the FTC's questions and answers page, a business may not use intimidation or an unfounded or groundless legal threat to get a review removed or changed, and intimidation can include abusive communications. Legitimate legal threats are allowed. The same page says a business may offer incentives for reviews but may not expressly or implicitly require that a review be positive or negative to earn one. Whether a given Amazon feedback comment is covered is a question for your counsel, but a refund conditional on a changed rating is exactly the kind of conduct the rule is written to address. The FTC also notes that contacting unhappy customers to resolve their issues is permitted.

A message that stays on safe ground names the order, acknowledges the problem, states what you have done and asks nothing about the score. If the buyer later withdraws the feedback within their window, good. If they do not, you have still reduced the chance of a repeat complaint.

Respond publicly to feedback you cannot remove

Amazon lets sellers add a public response to feedback. The guide says a public reply can help correct the record when the feedback comes from a misunderstanding, and that when it points to a real issue the reply should offer a solution. Used well, a reply turns a negative mark into evidence of service.

A reply that works is three or four sentences: thanks, a specific acknowledgment, one fact only if it corrects the record, and what you changed. For an invented comment such as "Arrived late and the box was crushed", blaming the carrier fails; owning the standard and naming the new packaging and carrier works. It never names the buyer's personal details, never argues, never mentions the rating system and never implies the buyer lied.

Leave the reply off when the comment is hostile or personal: abuse is a removal case, not a conversation.

What one negative rating can do to a small account: a worked scenario

Feedback matters beyond appearance because Amazon tracks seller performance, and a small number of orders makes every complaint heavy. Amazon's account health formulas, thresholds and the way feedback is counted were not readable for this guide, so the arithmetic below is a simplified illustration with stated assumptions, not Amazon's calculation and not a threshold.

Invented scenario, generic seller. Assume 250 orders in a period and three of them carry a negative feedback comment, with no other problems. Dividing orders with a negative comment by total orders gives three in 250, which is 1.2 percent. With one comment removed it is 0.8 percent, and with two removed it is 0.4 percent.

Share of orders with a negative comment, invented sellerPercent of 250 orders; three negative comments, no other problems
No comment removed1.2%
One comment removed0.8%
Two comments removed0.4%

Computed from the stated assumptions only. It is not Amazon's formula and no Amazon threshold is implied.

The lesson is about volume. A small account is exposed to a single comment in a way a large one is not, so work the cause of every negative rating, not only the removal request. For large accounts the quiet risk is a pattern of similar complaints.

If you are the buyer: withdrawing the feedback you left

Buyers searching this query often want to withdraw feedback they gave. The Amazon-hosted guide says buyers have 60 days to remove feedback. It does not say what the 60 days are counted from, so check the date on your own feedback in your Amazon account before you assume you are in time.

A buyer who left a rating before the problem was solved is the most likely to withdraw it, which is why a seller who resolves an order quickly sometimes finds the rating gone without ever asking. Neither side should treat that as a trade. A buyer who withdraws because the seller fixed the problem is making a fair decision. A buyer who withdraws because they were offered money to do so is entering a transaction the FTC's rule is written to stop.

A realistic timeline for a feedback problem

Most feedback problems resolve in weeks, not days, and the order of events matters more than the speed. The table below is based on how these files usually run, with a request filed promptly. It is experience, not a promise, and Amazon's own decision times were not readable for this guide.

WhenWhat you doWhat usually happens
Day 0 to 1Sort the comment, file one request with the narrowest true reasonAmazon reviews it; timing varies
Day 1 to 7If refused, review the reason; follow up once with the exact words that meet a criterionA reply, often with the same answer
Week 1 to 2If the comment stays, post a public reply and fix the causeThe reply sits under the comment for future buyers
Week 2 to 8Watch for the buyer withdrawing; watch for repeats of the same complaintNew positive feedback dilutes the old
After the windowReview the pattern across all comments, not the single oneRatings stabilize if the cause is fixed

A single comment is noise; three comments with the same word in them are a process fault, so log each comment by bucket and cause. If the same complaints also reach search results for your store name, the monthly reputation monitoring service tracks that side.

What to do next

Start with the oldest unresolved negative feedback. Sort it into one of the four buckets, check what exactly it says about the order, and file a single request with the narrowest true reason.

If this is happening to you now

If a wave of unfair or abusive seller feedback is threatening your account, or a marketplace problem is spreading into search results for your brand, we can review the whole picture privately. Reputation Partners starts with an audit that sorts what is removable from what needs a reply or a fix. Request a private audit.

For the rule on pressuring reviewers, read the FTC's own questions and answers on the consumer reviews rule. For the removal request itself, the Amazon Seller Central forums host a Feedback Manager guide. This article is general information, not legal advice about your account or contract.

Questions people ask

Can I delete negative seller feedback myself?

The guide describes one route: you request removal in Feedback Manager and Amazon decides, and it states that not all requests are granted. You can also reply publicly or contact the buyer about the order through Amazon's messaging. Beyond that, only Amazon, or the buyer within their own window, takes the feedback down.

Does Amazon remove seller feedback if the issue was resolved?

The guide does not list a resolved issue as a removal reason. Its criteria concern the feedback itself, such as being inaccurate or unrelated to your product or service. Resolution still matters, because a buyer may choose to withdraw the rating, and because your public reply can show future buyers how you handled it.

How long do I have to request removal?

The guide read for this article gives buyers 90 days to leave feedback and 60 days to remove it, but it states no deadline for a seller's request. Confirm any limit shown in Feedback Manager. The safe approach is to file as soon as you have sorted the comment, rather than waiting to see whether the buyer withdraws.

Can I offer a refund if the buyer removes the feedback?

Do not. A refund tied to a changed rating is an incentive connected to sentiment, which the FTC's consumer reviews rule addresses, and Amazon sets its own limits on what sellers may say to buyers. Resolve the order on its merits and say nothing about the rating. If the buyer withdraws it unprompted, that is their choice.

Will removing feedback fix my account health?

It may help, but how Amazon counts feedback in account health could not be read for this guide, so check the metrics in Seller Central rather than assume. Either way, repeated complaints about the same cause will keep producing new ones, so fix the cause as well as filing the request.
